Nothing moved in the hallways as I expected. With no breeze or movement anywhere, it gave me shivers. Air circulation was a major part of any ship. It was loud and irritating, but the minute it shut down, everyone knew it and had a mini panic attack.
My shoulders were sore as they held my unconscious worry and stress. My comm on my arm showed me the map of Ryokosha. It guided me through the different corridors, and I was able to bypass areas where the hull had been breached. But it didnât show me corpses. And I found them. I found them all. The lack of air and the vacuum of space left them as they were, and I was saddened and horrified. The idea of Eizen never coming to get me and leaving me to wither and dry out crossed my mind. I could see myself losing oxygen as time passed waiting for him to pick me up. Thankfully, not having air to breathe was a passive way to die. From what I remember, people just went to sleep. I hoped if that happened, Iâd dream of Eizen and me, curled up in our bed, discussing our future. Eizen wanted to be a captain so much, and I worried that my current actions would curtail his promotions. But those were thoughts I needed to halt because they werenât helpful in my current situation. I had to keep my head, so I opened the commlink again.
âCommander, please tell me you contacted someone from the Admiralty or something. These people need to be sent home and put to rest.â I waited a minute, but received no response. I gritted my teeth and kept the angry words down. Didnât he understand? He was my connection, my only connection to the real world, and he had abandoned me. I looked at the dim computer screen on my arm and played with different functions. I wondered if I could locate the shipâs heart. I wanted to let her know that I hadnât left her behind. I was only on this never-ending excursion. The memories of her limp body mixed in with the death echoes and I gasped. No, this wasnât the time to give in. No more regrets, no more focussing on the negative possibilities. Eizen would get me, and I would say farewell to the poor soul waiting for me. This had to be my plan. I couldnât bear to lose sight of it.
My helmetâs light wasnât bright enough to penetrate the darkness. I grew weary of having to watch what was ahead and what was at my feet. I had opened various sections of panelling to see if I could get some power routed to the corridors, but I couldnât even get a blip. For one brief momentâand I mean briefâI considered climbing into the ventilation shafts and hobbling the crystals and fibres together for some relief. The memory of evil rat beasts with their sharp claws and acidic saliva waiting for me in the utter darkness stopped those thoughts quickly.
